I am actually extremely excited to finally begin sharing this with my friends, family, and the world. For the past 2 months, since I had heard of this program, I have been spending every spare second I have had researching, watching videos, reading peer reviewed articles, and searching for literally anything I could get my hands on because I was so impressed and intrigued with this program.
But first, a little about me. Why should you listen to me about health?
I have been an Exercise and Wellness major at BYU for the past 4 years. I just finished all my coursework and am set to graduate. I am currently studying to take my tests to get certified through NASM as a Personal Trainer and ACSM as a Health Fitness Specialist. Last summer I worked as a health coach for BYU, and the summer before that I interned as a trainer at a gym in Idaho. I absolutely loved what I did, helping clients set goals, teaching them how to achieve them, and keeping them motivated through a technique called motivational interviewing to help them succeed. I loved what I did and began dreaming of pursuing that as a career.
I loved working as a health coach, but I began to notice something troubling. It was hard for people to stay motivated! Even though I was doing everything in the book—using motivational interviewing, using all the tips and tricks I had learned and been taught in my major, spending hours researching and planning our one on one meetings, even creating cute little daily checklists with smiley faces—after about a few weeks, on the program that I was doing at that time, my client’s motivation began dwindling.
In addition, (and this part is important) I found it was extremely difficult to change people’s eating habits! (This is probably one of the hardest behavior changes out there!)
I had a client come in, he was just over 60 years old, and on the program we had created he had begun seeing some tone in his abs. He was so excited about his new body that he admitted to me that he really wanted a 6 pack at age 60.
My heart kind of sunk at this point.
I knew what he was eating. We had talked about changing his diet plan, and he had very openly rejected that idea. I knew that to get the kind of muscle tone needed for that 6 pack he would have to change what he was eating, simple as that. When I explained this to him he wasn’t too excited by the idea. We bumped up his exercise (which he was really good at doing by the way) and did all that he was willing to do . However, this experience made me wish, whole-heartedly, that my clients could see just how important diet really is. (EXPLAIN ABS OR NOT)
Not that exercise isn’t important, because it is extremely important for your heart health, muscles, joint function, brain function, and so on and so forth. But food is what is going to bring the greatest results in weight loss, blood pressure reduction, cholesterol levels, blood glucose, and a whole bunch of other great things that many turn to medications to fix.
I love that I have had the experiences I’ve had. They motivate me to continue doing what I love—helping others reach their best quality of life (thus the name reaching10). These experiences have taught me valuable lessons that, I believe, will only help me be a better health coach to my clients, to help them achieve their dreams. It is possible, and we can do it.

There are so many aspects to this program that make me so excited—to see my major applied in real life! It even addresses both the problems I originally encountered above—motivation and eating habits.
Client’s eat 6 small meals per day: to keep blood sugar levels constant so that both our metabolism and energy levels stay revved up all day long (avoiding the nasty energy crashes we all experience after, say, a big lunch). This blood sugar level control is also very important for diabetics and pre-diabetics.
Each meal is fortified with vitamins and minerals: I feel like this part is so important. So many people cut calories from their diet haphazardly, hoping to lose weight. The problem with this though, is that there are certain vitamins and minerals that our body needs to get from food! If we don’t know what we’re doing, it can really damage our bodies and cause unwanted and unnecessary problems!
This program walks you through weightloss , transition, and maintenance: This is a crazy statistic, but nearly 80% of people who lose weight, gain it back within 1 year of losing it. Isn’t that awful! It takes hard work to lose weight! What’s so great about this program is that it walks you through each stage—losing weight, adjusting back to normal foods, and maintaining that weight loss—so that weight gain doesn’t happen. We gradually teach you habits of health and how much food you can eat after the program to maintain what resulted from all the hard work you put into the program
